Which bike should you choose for an 8-year-old child?
Choosing the right bike for an 8-year-old child is one of the most important decisions for parents. The wrong bike can discourage the young cyclist, while the right one becomes an adventure companion for years. In this guide from the Cicli Sergio Bianchi Firenze team, you'll find all the answers.
What bike size does an 8-year-old need?
At 8 years old, most children use a bike with 20-inch wheels. However, the size depends on height, not age:
- Height 115–130 cm → 18" wheels
- Height 115–135 cm → 20" wheels (the most common size at 8 years old)
- Height 135–145 cm → 24" wheels and up
The easiest way to check: the child should be able to touch the ground with both feet while sitting on the saddle, with knees slightly bent.
With or without gears?
For an 8-year-old beginner, a bike with 1 speed or 6 speeds is more than enough. Too many gears can be confusing and require coordination that children develop gradually. If the route is mostly flat (like the center of Florence), a single speed is perfectly fine.
Accessories
- Training wheels (only for the first few weeks, then remove them)
- Bell
- Front and rear lights if riding at dusk
What is the best bike for children in Florence?
To get around the historic center of Florence, with its cobblestone streets and bike paths along the Arno, we recommend a 20" bike with semi-slick tires (not too knobby), aluminum V-brake brakes, and an adjustable saddle and handlebars. This way, the bike can "grow" with the child for a few more years.
