Bike maintenance: the annual schedule to keep it in perfect condition all year round
A bike is a simple vehicle, but like any mechanical vehicle, it requires regular attention and care. Consistent maintenance not only extends the bike’s life but also ensures safety and riding enjoyment. In this guide, you will find a complete schedule of all the tasks to perform, organized by frequency.
Why regular maintenance is essential
Many cyclists only work on their bike when something breaks. This is a costly mistake: a neglected component deteriorates more quickly, taking other components with it. An unlubricated chain, for example, wears out the sprockets and chainring within a few weeks. Preventive servicing costs far less than an emergency repair.
This is even more important for e-bikes, where the mechanical components are joined by a battery, motor, and electronic display — all elements requiring specific attention.
✅ Monthly checklist (every 4 weeks)
These tasks take 10–15 minutes and can be done independently without any special tools:
- Tyre pressure — Check it with a pressure gauge. City bikes generally require 4–6 bar, while mountain bikes require 2–3 bar. Correct pressure reduces the risk of punctures and improves efficiency.
- Chain lubrication — Clean the chain with a dry cloth and apply a specific lubricant (chain oil, not WD-40). Use dry lubricants in summer and wet lubricants in winter.
- Brakes — Check that the levers have the right amount of resistance and that the brake pads are not worn. Hydraulic disc brakes require less maintenance, but they still need to be checked.
- Gears — Try all the gears: shifting should be smooth and quiet. Creaking or chain skips indicate that an adjustment is needed.
- Lights — Check that the front and rear lights work, especially in autumn and winter.
🔧 Seasonal checklist (every 3 months)
Four times a year, spend 30–45 minutes on a more thorough inspection:
- Thorough cleaning — Wash the bike with water and mild detergent. Avoid directing the jet at the bearings and bottom bracket. Dry it thoroughly before lubricating.
- Brake and gear cables — Check that they are not oxidized or frayed and that their housings are not damaged. Worn cables compromise braking and shifting precision.
- Screws and bolts — Check the tightness of the handlebars, stem, saddle, and rack. Use a torque wrench if available.
- Wheels — Check that they are true (the wheels should not wobble from side to side) and inspect the condition of the spokes. An out-of-true wheel wears unevenly.
- E-bike battery — If you have an e-bike, check the battery contacts, clean them with a dry cloth, and make sure its capacity has not decreased significantly.
🛠️ Complete annual service
Once a year — ideally at the end of winter, before the good weather arrives — take your bike to the workshop for a complete service. Our workshop in Florence performs:
- Chain replacement (if wear exceeds 1%)
- Brake pad inspection and replacement
- Bottom bracket adjustment and lubrication
- Headset and hub bearing inspection
- Complete gear adjustment and inspection
- Structural frame inspection
- For e-bikes: electronic diagnostics, firmware update, battery test
A professional annual service generally costs between 50 and 120 euros, depending on the type of bike and the replacements needed. A minimal investment compared with the cost of avoidable repairs.

Special advice by bike type
City bikes
Daily use in an urban environment exposes your bike to dust, rain, and temperature fluctuations. Pay particular attention to the chain (which gets dirty quickly) and the brakes. If you use your bike year-round, consider winter tires with a softer compound.
E-bike
Never leave the battery completely discharged for extended periods: the ideal storage level is between 30% and 80%. In winter, store the battery indoors at room temperature. Avoid charging it immediately after intense use: wait for it to cool down.
Vintage bikes
Vintage bikes require specific lubricants for older components. Rod or drum brakes require different adjustments from modern brakes. Rely on a mechanic experienced with classic bikes for annual servicing.
When to take your bike to the workshop immediately
Do not wait for the annual service if you notice any of these signs:
- Creaking or unusual noises while pedaling
- Brakes that do not bite or brake unevenly
- Gears skipping or not engaging properly
- Wheels wobbling from side to side
- Frame with visible cracks or deformations
- E-bike battery draining much faster than usual
