Italy in the Saddle: A Guide to 5 Legendary Routes

Italy in the Saddle: A Guide to 5 Legendary Routes

Edited by Lorenzo Bianchi

Lorenzo Bianchi's Welcome

Over 4 generations of passion, one pedal stroke at a time.

Welcome to this journey. For us at Cicli Sergio Bianchi, the bicycle has never been just a means of transportation or a collection of mechanical components. In the heart of Florence, we see the bicycle as a true "freedom machine."

Today, in an increasingly fast-paced world, we've rediscovered the value of cycle tourism: a way to explore the landscape slowly and sustainably. Pedaling means inhaling the scent of the forest, listening to the sound of the wind, and authentically connecting with the beauty of Italy, leaving no traces other than those of your tires on the ground.

In this ebook, I've selected for you the routes we love most. Whether you're an expert cyclist or simply an enthusiast, our goal is the same as it was over a hundred years ago: to accompany you on your next cycling journey, guaranteeing safety, quality, and that touch of expertise that only a historic workshop can offer.

Technical Preparation: Your Checklist

Before you set off, safety and organization are essential. Don't let a small setback ruin a grand panorama. Here's what you should never leave out:

1. Bike Inspection (The Complete Check-up)

Before you set off, make sure the mechanics are in perfect condition. Stop by the shop for a checkup or check for yourself:

  • Brakes:Wear of the pads and tension of the levers.
  • Transmission:Clean and lubricated chain, smooth shifting in every gear.
  • Tires:Check the tread condition and correct pressure (calibrated based on the load of the bags).
  • Hardware:Tightening racks, handlebars and pedals.

2. Repair kit (Always on hand)

Autonomy is part of the adventure. Always keep the following in your underseat or frame bag:

  • Spare inner tube (of the correct size!) and tire levers.
  • Multi-tool with chain breaker.
  • Portable pump or CO2 canister.
  • Quick puncture patch kit.

3. Recommended clothing

The secret is to dress in layers to adapt to changes in climate and slope:

  • Quality seat pad shorts:Essential for long hours in the saddle.
  • Breathable technical shirt:To manage sweat and avoid chills.
  • Helmet and glasses:Safety is not an option, nor is eye protection from debris.

The Selected Paths (The Heart of the Ebook)

Route 1: The Parks Cycle Path (Calabria)

  • Why choose it:About 400 km of wilderness between Pollino, Sila, Serre, and Aspromonte.
  • Level:Difficult (11,000m D+).
  • Highlights:Bosnian pines and villages where time has stood still.

Route 2: The Via Francigena by Bike (Tuscany)

Recommended route:From Lucca to Siena.

Why choose it:History, spirituality and the iconic landscapes of the Val d'Orcia.

  • Level:Medium (dirt roads and hills).
  • KM:128 km approximately

Route 3: The Sun Cycle Path (Mirandola - Bologna Section)

Why choose it:It takes advantage of the former railway line. It's flat, safe, and perfect for families.

  • Level:Easy.
  • Highlights:The metal bridges and the old, restored stations.

Route 4: The Ring of Salento (Puglia)

Why choose it:Starting and finishing in Lecce (160 km). It runs along the crystal-clear sea and passes through centuries-old olive groves.

  • Level:Easy/Medium.
  • Featured:Sunset in Santa Maria di Leuca.

Route 5: Alpe Adria Cycle Path (Friuli Venezia Giulia)

Why choose it:Often voted Europe's trail of the year. From the mountains to the sea (from Tarvisio to Grado).

  • Level:Medium/Easy - 145 km - (lots of downhill if done south).
  • Highlight:The passage through the old illuminated railway tunnels.

Conclusions: The beginning of your next adventure

We've reached the end of this little guide, but the real journey begins now: the moment you close this screen, check your tire pressure, and take your first pedal stroke.

Italy, seen from the saddle of a bicycle , has a different flavor. It's made up of details that escape you in a car and remain too distant on foot. It's the scent of maritime pine, the silence of dirt roads at dawn, and the satisfaction of reaching a summit relying only on your own two feet (or the intelligent assistance of an electric motor).

At Cicli Sergio Bianchi, our mission for four generationshas been to ensure every kilometer of your ride is perfect. We're not just bicycle sellers; we're custodians of a tradition that evolves with you. Whether you choose to ride the Via Francigena or lose yourself among the trails of Salento, know that our workshop and our experience are always by your side.
