5 Steps to Clean Your Bike After the Rain

Have you been riding in the rain? Your bike deserves immediate attention. Water, mud, and road debris can damage valuable components if left untreated. From our historic showroom in Florence, here's a practical guide to preserving your bike.

1. Rinse Immediately with Fresh Water

Don't wait for the mud to dry. Use a gentle jet of water (never high pressure) to remove surface dirt, debris, and salt residue from the road. Focus on the frame, fork, wheels, and drivetrain.

Caution: Avoid directing the jet directly onto bearings, bottom brackets and hubs to avoid forcing water inside.

2. Degreasing the Transmission

Chains, sprockets, and chainrings are the first to suffer after rain. Apply a specific bike degreaser, let it sit for 2-3 minutes, then brush gently with a stiff-bristled brush.

Heritage Components: If you have a vintage Campagnolo groupset, use gentle, non-aggressive products to preserve the original finish.

3. Thorough Drying

Use clean microfiber cloths to dry every part of the bike. Pay particular attention to:

  • Frame and fork (especially joints and welds)
  • Chromed or polished components
  • Brakes (pads and discs or shoes and rims)
  • Saddle and handlebars

An air compressor (low pressure) can help remove water from difficult spots.

4. Chain Lubrication

Once dry, the chain should be lubricated immediately. Apply specific bicycle chain oil to each link, reverse the pedals to distribute the oil, then wipe off the excess with a cloth.

Tip: Choose lubricants suited to the weather conditions. For the Florentine winter, an oil for humid conditions is ideal.

5. Final Check and Protection

Inspect the brakes, transmission, and tires. Check that there's no mud residue in the brakes and that the tires haven't picked up any sharp debris. Apply a protective polish to the frame to create a barrier against future moisture.

For vintage bikes with leather components (Brooks saddle, handlebar tape), treat with specific products to maintain softness and waterproofness.
