How to Adjust Bike Brakes in 5 Minutes: A Practical Guide
Brakes are one of the most important components of your bike : they must always be efficient to ensure safety and optimal performance.
If you feel that the brakes are not responding well or the lever is too soft, it's time to make an adjustment.
In this guide we explain how to adjust your bike brakes in 5 minutes , step by step.
✅ 1. Check the Brake Type
There are mainly two types of brakes:
- Rim brakes (V-brakes or calipers): common on city bikes and racing bikes.
- Disc brakes (mechanical or hydraulic): present on modern MTBs and bicycles.
This guide applies to both, with small differences in the steps.
✅ 2. Check the wear of the pads
Before adjusting:
- Check that the pads are not worn (they should have visible grooves).
- If they are too thin, replace them before proceeding.
✅ 3. Tighten the Brake Cable
For rim brakes:
- Find the cable tensioner (usually near the lever or brake).
- Rotate it counterclockwise to increase the tension.
- If the cable is too loose, unscrew the bolt near the brake, pull the cable and tighten again.

For mechanical disc brakes:
-
Make sure the disc does not rub against the pads.
-
Act on the adjustment screw near the left-hand caliper (SX) to move the pad closer or further away.
-
Also adjust the adjustment screw behind the right-hand side (DX) caliper to achieve the correct alignment.
-
Gradually tighten until you get a quick and confident response to the lever.

For hydraulic disc brakes:
-
The disc must not rub against the pads: if necessary, center the caliper by slightly loosening the screws, brake and tighten them again.
-
Check that no air bubbles have formed in the system (bleeding is necessary if necessary).
-
Check that there are no oil leaks in the system.
-
Always use the correct oil for your system (e.g. mineral oil or DOT-specific oil as specified by the manufacturer).
✅ 4. Check the Symmetry
For rim brakes:
- The skates must touch the rim at the same time.
- If one arrives first, adjust the centering screw on the brake arm.
For disc brakes:
- The pads must touch the disc at the same time.
- If you notice that the caliper piston is too close to the disc, replace the pads to prevent oil leakage.
✅ 5. Final Test
- Press the lever firmly: the stroke should be short and firm.
- Take a test ride and check that the bike brakes without noise or rubbing.
Now you know how to adjust your bike brakes in 5 minutes!
Regular maintenance prevents problems and increases safety.
