Complete Guide to Transmission Maintenance

Introduction

The drivetrain is one of the most critical components of your bicycle. Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance, smooth shifting, and longer component life.

Chain Cleaning

The chain should be cleaned every 200-300 km or after every ride in muddy or rainy conditions. Use a specific degreaser and a brush to remove dirt and residue. After cleaning, dry thoroughly before lubricating.

Lubrication

Apply the specific chain lubricant drop by drop to each link, rotating the pedals backward. Let it sit for a few minutes, then remove the excess with a clean cloth. Choose dry lubricants for dry conditions and wet lubricants for rainy weather.

Wear Control

Use a chain gauge to check the elongation. Replace the chain when it reaches 0.75% wear to preserve the sprockets and chainrings. Also check the tooth wear: if they have a "shark fin" shape, it's time to replace them.

Gearbox Adjustment

Periodically check cable tension and shift accuracy. Adjust the tension adjusters to optimize response. Also check the rear derailleur alignment and the limit screws.

Recommended Frequency

  • Cleaning and lubrication: every 200-300 km
  • Check chain wear: every 500 km
  • Chain replacement: every 2000-3000 km
  • Sprocket pack replacement: every 2-3 chains

A well-maintained drivetrain improves pedaling efficiency and reduces long-term maintenance costs.
