The 10 questions we are asked most often in the store

The answers you were looking for, directly from our daily experience

Every day, in our shop, we encounter people with doubts, curiosities, and questions about choosing the perfect bike. After years of experience, we've noticed that some questions are particularly recurring. We've decided to collect the 10 most common ones and provide detailed answers that can help you even before you visit us. Here's what our customers ask us most often.

1. "What's the difference between one bike and another?"

When comparing Sergio Bianchi's "Economy Bike" and the "21-Speed Aluminum Bike," the main difference that stands out isn't the design, but the mechanical heart and price. Both models are designed for the city, but with different performance levels.

  • Economy Bike (lower price, around €170): This is a simple, basic bike. It has a limited number of gears (often just one). This makes it ideal for short trips and on flat roads. It's like a small car: it gets the job done in the city, but struggles on hills or longer rides.

  • 21-Speed Aluminum Bike (Top Price, Around €300): The name says it all: it has well 21 reports (gears). This wide range of choices makes pedaling much easier and more adaptable. It's perfect for tackling climbs, mixed routes, and longer journeys.

2. "Is steel or aluminum better for the frame?"

It depends on the use and priorities. Steel offers superior comfort because it absorbs vibrations and ages gracefully, developing a characteristic patina. It's ideal for city bikes , urban use on cobblestones, and for those seeking classic aesthetics and comfort.

Aluminum is lighter (1-2 kg less), stiffer (transmits power better), and doesn't rust. It's perfect for folding bikes (where weight matters), trekking bikes, mountain bikes, and anyone who has to carry their bike up stairs every day.

There's no objectively better choice: it depends on what you're looking for. Come try them both and you'll immediately notice the difference.

3. "How many gears do I really need?"

Less than you think, but it depends on the terrain. In Florence, with its climbs towards Piazzale Michelangelo or Fiesole, you need at least six gears. For flat urban use, even a single-speed transmission will suffice.

Our advice: for the city, a minimum of 6-speed gears is ideal. Smooth shifting and low maintenance. For trekking or mixed routes, 18 to 21 speeds with a front derailleur offer greater versatility, precision, and speed.

4. "Is a folding bike as comfortable as a normal one?"

Modern folding bikes have reached levels of comfort comparable to traditional city bikes, with some differences.

The smaller wheels (16" vs. 20") transmit slightly more vibrations on very uneven surfaces, but large-diameter tires compensate. The riding position can be optimized with adjustable handlebars and saddle. Frame rigidity, thanks to advanced engineering, is excellent.

For urban routes, the difference in comfort is minimal. Over longer distances, a traditional city bike with large wheels offers an advantage. But the folding bike more than makes up for it with versatility and practicality.

Our advice: try both for at least 10 minutes. Comfort is subjective, and only you can decide what you prefer.

5. "How do I choose the right size?"

Size is crucial for comfort and safety. A bike that's too big causes back and shoulder pain, while one that's too small strains your knees and wrists.

The basic rule: when standing astride the frame, there should be 5-10 cm of space between the top tube and your crotch. When sitting in the saddle, with the pedal at its lowest point, your leg should be almost fully extended but not locked.

But every body is different. Equal height doesn't mean equal proportions: some have long legs and a short torso, or vice versa. That's why, in the shop, we always do a test ride, adjusting the saddle and handlebars, and checking for correct posture.

6. "How long does a bike last?"

With proper maintenance, a quality bike lasts for decades. We have customers who use bikes they purchased from us 15-20 years ago every day, and they're still in perfect working order.

A quality steel or aluminum frame lasts practically forever. Components subject to wear (chain, sprockets, brake pads, tires) need to be replaced periodically, but they are inexpensive. The main components on quality bikes last even with intensive use.

Preventive maintenance is key: regular lubrication, periodic checks, and timely intervention at the first signs of wear. A neglected bike deteriorates in 3-4 years; a well-maintained one lasts a lifetime.

Think of your bike as a long-term investment, not a one-time purchase. The annual cost of owning a well-maintained, quality bike is negligible.

7. "Can I use my bike in winter and in the rain?"

Absolutely, with the right precautions. Bikes are designed for all-season use.

For rain: full fenders (not the short, decorative ones, but the ones that really cover), always-functioning lights, V-brakes, and waterproof clothing. After every ride in the rain, dry your bike and lube the chain.

For winter: tires with a deeper tread for grip on slippery surfaces, specific lubricant for low temperatures, and frequent pressure checks (cold temperatures reduce pressure). Avoid leaving your bike outside in sub-zero temperatures: humidity can wear out the brake cables.

Thousands of people in Northern Europe ride their bikes daily, even in snow and ice. Florence, with its mild climate, is a year-round paradise for cyclists.

8. "What kind of lock do I need?"

The lock is as important as the bike itself. A bike attracts the attention of thieves, so it needs adequate protection.

Our recommendation: padlocks like Abus, Kryptonite, or BRN for long-term use. A sturdy chain with a fabric sheath for flexibility. Avoid thin cable locks: they can be cut in 10 seconds with wire cutters.

Rule of thumb: invest 10-15% of the bike's value in the lock. It seems like a lot, but it's the only real protection.

And remember: even the best lock isn't foolproof. Whenever possible, keep your bike indoors, in the office, or somewhere secure. Absolute safety means never leaving it unattended.

9. "Disc or traditional brakes?"

It depends on the use and budget. Disc brakes offer superior stopping power, work perfectly even in rain and mud, and require less force on the lever (ideal for small or weak hands). They're perfect for trekking, mountain biking, intensive use, and trails with challenging descents.

Traditional brakes are simpler, cheaper, easier to maintain, and sufficient for flat urban use.

For Florence, with its descents towards the Arno River, we recommend at least quality V-brakes. Disc brakes are a plus, not a necessity, unless you're tackling challenging out-of-town routes.

10. "Can I customize my bike?"

Absolutely, and it's one of the things we love doing most. The bike is YOURS and it's a platform that can be customized in a thousand ways.

You can change the saddle to suit your anatomy, replace the handlebars to change the riding position, add racks and baskets to increase carrying capacity, install more powerful lights, fit different tires for specific uses, add mudguards, bells, and mirrors.

You can also make technical upgrades: go from a 6-speed to a 7-speed gearbox, replace the brakes with higher-performance models, or install professional pedals. Each modification is evaluated together for compatibility and cost-effectiveness.

Personalization transforms the bike into a unique object, perfectly tailored to you. And it increases the emotional connection: it truly becomes YOUR bike, not just any bike.
